Farewell Whitney...
As a little girl, my friends and I spent many a slumber party cheorographing dances to Whitney Houston cassette tapes. She always looked like she was having a blast in her music videos and we wanted to experience that fun. The sparkle in her eyes, the all-American mold breaking beauty and a voice that no one in the eighties could touch made her an icon to little girls everywhere. Where Madonna wasn't approved listening for many mothers, listening to Whitney was encouraged. There was a moral goodness about her. She was just human though. Just a woman that got caught up with the wrong guy and made a lot of wrong choices. Vying to get back on track and meet the expectations of all who were invested in her fame only brought anxiety and lonliness. This has been happening to stars for decades. Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Judy Garland, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison are just a few. If only their fame didn't have to come with the detrimental temptation to surround themselves with enablers then maybe we could have experienced their God given gifts for as long as he intended.
